Apart of being holy like God, God commanded Israelites to not cut or mutilate their bodies (especially in mourning/respect for the dead) and to not get tattoos on their bodies:
Leviticus 19:28
“Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves.”
God forbid his nation Israel to put tattoos on or cut their skin: they were to not to follow the practices of pagan nations all around them (that cut themselves and marked their bodies in tattoos) used to worship their false gods and honor their dead around them! So, no Israelite was to ever cut their skin or get a tattoo; if they did, they would no longer be considered holy or pure before God!
